Ever the romantic, I still use fountain pens for letters (and drawing) and love a well written letter. Email has taken all the fun out of letter writing, but I have a plethora of fountain pens and pen nibs, a couple bottles of ink, and one seal which I use from time to time.

In the middle of creating this painting, the individual who commissioned it came through the door: “Oh-my-gosh I just love this - it is perfect!” I laughed explained I had not taken it to the place I was heading; a little punch up here, and a delicate movement there, and a splash of accent color there, etc. is where I was headed. “No, don’t I love it just as it is!” So I put down my brush. :-)

Next time you are in a gallery or museum take pause when viewing Impressionistic portraiture. If you are not an artist and new to viewing art, here is an example of what to look for in this style painting.

Click on this first image, it will enlarge and you will easily see what Impressionism is all about, there are no hard lines.

Note the edge of ballerina Buffy Miller's leotard; soft, not a hard line against the light blue background. Note her skin against the background; soft, not a hard line against the background. Paint is applied gently by rocking the edge of the loaded paintbrush back and forth along an edge.

Next view the lower image and note how the entire painting views at a distance. Clearly there are no hard edges in the entire painting, including where the floor in the background meets the wall.

I adore this painting, one by my dad, for its great examples of composition, value and ~ soft edges.

I drew Paul Gauguin from a photograph taken of him in Paris in 1894, from the book Gauguin, by Lesley Stevenson this morning while having coffee. Black and white photographs are fabulous to draw from as light and dark values are so obvious. For me my goal in a drawing is to capture the likeness and mood over perfection in realism, although the latter always a plus. This was a quick study done with water soluble graphite pencil

When I visited the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House a red painting was hanging in one of the beautiful rooms which reminded me of an older painting of mine, Secret Garden (ABOVE) Look closely there really is a secret garden in this painting! Due to crowds and having to keep moving I am at a loss to recall which room it was in, or know who the fine artist is that created it, but it was lovely, wish I had a photo to show you.

This is actually a 3x3 section of a larger painting (36x60) I have completely finished painting, I will post the entire painting later.

Let's talk abstraction. I am a fairly traditionalist artist, so when it comes to abstraction a more traditional approach does have its disadvantages. Unlike mixed media or collage I do not have much to work with other than paint and a brush. Painting this way is very basic and raw, moving paint around on a surface essentially waiting to see what comes forward that you can work with.
All artists work differently, and I find I am NOT able to work abstraction out ahead of time on paper and try to reproduce. I worked Nocturne out on a small board, initially, and thankfully the larger painting was better working larger, and that was the only time. Simply put, what comes spontaneously for me cannot be duplicated, something will be lost in translation.

A Serendipitous Moment

My husband returned from a meeting this afternoon carrying a magazine. I knew something was up, he's not a magazine kind of guy. He began flipping the pages, stopped, and passed the magazine to me. To my surprise there was a photo at the top of the page. I laughed. It was my photo, however this page is

is from a cover story, Expanding the Footprint, by Tyler Montgomery, on fitness mogul Michael Olander, in May 2010 edition of Club Solutions magazine. What is serendipitous is that I had just exchanged emails this morning with the designer I collaborated with a couple years ago on commissioned art pieces for this particular project who will be the next designer highlighted sharing how commissioned fine art is incorporated in her design and space planning projects. I won't mention her name just yet, but what a nice surprise to see this.

Atlanta's Claire Watkins

I was standing in a gorgeous room bathed in early morning light so soft and pure it was magic, eased my nerves typical to that space in time between completing a painting and when it is viewed for the first time. I hoped the designer would be pleased with the piece I created using a photograph of the room as inspiration. Respected photographer Amy Herr was due any minute, new furnishings had been placed where pieces in the photo had once been - oh how the room had been transformed by the designer's vision, gorgeous! My thoughts were interrupted by voices followed by that kind of contagious laugh that makes you grin even not knowing what the laughter is about. A tall and beautiful individual with a big smile entered the room handing me a dozen yellow roses, "Thank you for coming, these are for you!” Thus began a little time spent with delightful Atlanta designer Claire Watkins complete with a warm introduction to amazing Amy Herr.

My first knowledge of Claire was through notable Atlanta bloggers about a year ago. There has always been a buzz about Claire, everyone seems to know her, and to know her is to love her, to view her work is to know her even better and love her even more. Claire is a grad of the art school at The University of Georgia with a BFA in interior design, her expertise in commercial and residential design, space planning, and staging. I once visited a commercial space she had just completed, but this was my first foray into her residential work, love it! Thanks, Claire!

This week I had the opportunity to work with two amazing designers in Atlanta, Claire Watkins and Capella Kincheloe. Both were working on photo shoots with fast deadlines and were super to request my abstracts. I have not seen the images so I am unable to post as yet, but as Atlanta is all a-buzz today about the news which included Capella's, I can expound on that! Capella has been named among a list of impressive designers on the hugely anticipated Atlanta Homes and Lifestyle’s Christmas House! Her credentials are impressive having worked four years in Los Angeles with acclaimed designer Michael S. Smith, the current White House decorator. Capella is a grad of USC and has also worked in production design in film and television; her last project, The Prestige, was nominated for an Academy Award in Production Design. Capella has worked on design projects all over the world, and will be one to definitely watch. Further information may be found via Atlanta Homes and Lifestyle’s blog, as well as the Official Atlanta Christmas House website. On a personal note, Capella is one of those individuals who has the rare gift to articulate in few words what might take others several sentences to convey, myself included. Luanne Freer was a grade above me in high school. Friendly, athletic, gorgeous and studious, loved by her peers and by her teachers, I knew Luanne would be one to leave high school and go on to do something amazing with her life. I was correct, Luanne became a physician and works for Medcor, Inc., a company which runs clinics in out of the way locations.
Luanne has served since 2003 as as the Chairman, Founder/Director of Everest ER the Everest Base Camp Medical Clinic, a project of the Himalayan Rescue Association-USA, a US based nonprofit charity organization, and Himalayan Rescue Association, a non-profit Nepali NGO. Everest ER was first established during the 2003 Everest 50th Anniversary. Their mission is to provide altitude-experienced quality health care and preventative education to the climbing community in base camp at Everest. Proceeds from this care subsidizes free/low cost health care for the Sherpa people of the Khumbu region of Nepal.
On July 23rd a fundraiser and silent auction for Everest ER will take place in Aspen CO. Viewing this painting at a distance I am reminded of the flower arrangement my dear husband presented me at the hospital. I was deeply touched by his concern when he walked in the room, and by his thoughtfulness in selecting the most beautiful blue irises I'd ever seen. Art Core is celebrating the remarkable work of a very gifted artist this month:

Art Core: When did you first realize you were an artist?
As far back as kindergarten I remembered being puzzled as to why classmates would draw people with stick arms and legs. Though I liked their happy faces I didn’t want to draw people that way. Instead of stick figures I drew ballerinas in tutus and slippers dancing across a curtained stage. I was happy in art, my favorite time in school, but never underestimate how the power of words and how they are said can greatly affect a small mind.
Sometime after second grade my impressionable ears overheard a person of authority say as humans were all uniquely different, each with something uniquely special to offer and we were obligated to find out what that was. I took that straight into my child’s understanding to literally mean I needed to be different than my parents. In youthful ignorance I made a conscious decision that there were people in the family who painted, it was their special thing, and I needed to find out what my something special was. I concentrated on dance and music, other things, until adulthood brought new responsibility and demands upon my time. I even played music professionally for a time, but it wasn’t until my father tricked me into doing a still life in his studio that I realized art was in my very core, and I’d wasted a whole lot of time.

Art Core: You have a variety of styles. Could you tell us some more about your work? That has a lot to do with an insatiable desire to cram a lot of art experience into an accelerated amount of time. I began with loose impressionism, and then tightened up for a period, and now I find I often combine the two. I do not limit myself to canvas if a need calls for something else. I work in oils and acrylics, pastel at times, and can often be aggressive with color but then turn around and do something 100% in the opposite direction.

Art Core: When you paint a portrait you capture a spark of that person. How do you translate that emotion into painting? That is very generous, thank you so much. It doesn’t hurt that I love people. They are beautiful and complicated. As a child throughout my teenage years I adored playing the staring game, the one where two people stare into each ether’s eyes and the first to look away loses. I got really good at that game. It taught me to never shy away from looking deeply into a person’s eyes. Eyes truly are the window to the soul and the longer you look the more you know. I try to tap into whatever is going within that person, take that in and absorb it, and then translate that into the work. I am definitely much more concerned about capturing an essence than creating great work. I guess to sum it up it isn’t a technical thing for me, but rather a personal thing. All my painting is personal. To be frank, I don’t know how I do any of it.

Art Core: What famous artists have influenced you, and how? Bouguereau, Whistler, Singer Sargeant, Westerberg, Kassan, Puliese, Lindstrom, Ignatov, Lipking, Taylor (Justin), Alexander Volkov. I could literally go on and on. I’ve recently discovered the wonderful Graydon Parrish. All of these artists are masterful with conveying mood and emotion; it simply oozes from their work. No matter how technically well executed a painting may be, if it doesn’t have life it makes me uncomfortable. Must have life, emotion, passion.

Art Core: What do you do for fun (besides painting and drawing)? Seriously not much right now. My husband and I use to do a lot of trail riding, and I really miss that. We are both self employed and free time often is not an option. We must work all aspects of business which takes a great deal of time. On occasion his work spills into mine and vice versa. We do well to go to a restaurant once every couple of weeks. But that is okay, that is what it takes.

Art Core: What inspires you to create art? Music and viewing good portraiture inspires me, but I rarely view abstract art if I can help it. Abstracts have to come from someplace within, there is no visual to go by. They can be very difficult and if not done while in the moment a work will turn out visually contrived. I have kind of a photographic memory when it comes to paintings anyway, so I never want another abstract to influence what I do. How do I keep motivated when things get tough in the studio? I’ve learned it is best to walk away and come back with fresh eyes and spirit in order to keep from overworking a painting.

Art Core: How have you handled the business side of being an artist? The business side is a necessary evil and takes entirely too much time away from the creative process. I’ve reluctantly removed the comment option on my blog in some small effort to remedy serious time constraints. Something had to give as I couldn’t possibly live with myself if I did not respond to each and every comment left by readers. Other than that one must be creative and work all angles. The art market is a tough market, especially in this economy.

Art Core: What advice would you give to an artist just starting out? Never give up, just don’t do it. If you cannot afford to do it full time, paint when you can. And if at all possible, find someone to assist with the business end!

Atlanta metro experienced the worst flooding anyone can remember, 20 inches of rain! Many neighborhoods, interstates, schools, businesses underwater, schools closed for days, and loss for many.
